It is with great sadness that I report the passing of Lion Dick Siegfried on March 6th.
As a member and treasurer of the Saratoga Lions Club he will be greatly missed.
His good humor, friendship, and willingness to serve, was appreciated by all our members.
A Memorial Service is planned for March 15th at Bellarmine Preparatory School with a reception to follow. As soon as the time has been determined we will send out an email.

We Installed Three New Members
into the Saratoga Lions Club on March 2.

We hope you will all be able to greet them at our next meeting.

The new members are:
Gerald May, Georgina Burgess, and Beverly Peck.

We had a beautiful installation conducted by PDG Marlene Duffin.

Our meeting was further enhanced by an informative presentation on the Eye Foundation of California Nevada by Jim Goodheart.

Remember that the Zone Speakers Contest will take place at the Saratoga Library on March 5th at 6:45pm and our local winner will be participating.

Peace Poster Contest Reception

Thank you for bringing the delicious cake, soda, taking photos, and most of all,being there for the students who participated in our Saratoga Lions Peace Poster Contest.
I know this is a busy time of year and we are going to make better time arrangements next year. The date was set by the library and I did not know this was the last day of school so some students had already left on holiday. My-Lan took all the certificates to give to her teacher and classmates.
Peggy Baker, The Childrens Librarian is willing to work with us once again next year for the Peace Poster Contest. We will make sure that the size requirements are emphasized.
Our winner My-Lan was very pleased with her Gift of a $25.00 Barnes and Noble Gift Certificate. She told me it was very generous of our club to award her with the gift.

Peace Poster Contest 2009

The Saratoga Lions Club is sponsoring the Lions International Peace Poster Contest in conjunction with the Saratoga Library.
Lions Clubs sponsor the Peace Poster Contest worldwide in their communities to emphasize the importance of world peace to young people. The contest is open to children ages 11, 12 and 13 years of age. Birth date requirements will be found on the application.

A display of former world wide winners will be in the Saratoga Children’s Library along with all information needed to enter the Contest.
This year’s topic is “The Power of Peace”.
Saratoga Lions Club President Elaine Clabeaux, and Peggy Sue Baker, the Children’s Supervising Librarian are working together to bring this opportunity to all local children.

The starting date is Sept 11, 2009 and all art must be submitted to the Children’s Library reference desk by October 15.
The grand prize includes a cash award of US $2,500. In addition the winner receives a trip with two family members to New York City, New York for the awards ceremony at Lions Day with the United Nations. The 23 merit award winners each receive a certificate and a cash award of US$500.
Last year the winner was a local girl from Milpitas, however entries come in from all over the world.

On November 1 a reception will be held at the Saratoga Library for all participants. Local professional judges will determine the winner for our club.
In addition all attendees will be able to vote for their favorite poster and students will be honored for their participation by the Saratoga Lions Club.

The Tuesday, July 7 Lions topic for the 6:00 pm meeting will be about DOMESTIC VIOLENCE. Speaker LAURA GUTHRIDGE is from the Support Network for Battered Women’s Center in Sunnyvale. She works with junior high and high school students talking about dating violence, and she also provides domestic violence education and outreach to adult groups..

There are some startling findings in the research from the Southern Connecticut State University: There are an estimated 28 million battered women in the U.S.-- more than half of all married women in the country. In the U.S battering is the single major cause of injury to women between the ages of 15 and 44 in the country. This problem crosses all economic and ethnic boundaries.

I am happy to announce that Bob Louden is a one of the seven nominees of the Saratoga citizen of the year. There is an Awards Dinner on June 19, Friday at the Saratoga Community Center – 19655 Allendale Ave, Saratoga, CA between 6pm to 9pm.

Each Nominee has their own table for ten people.

We have to support Bob. He works a lot for Saratoga and helps people in need for a long time. As Marlene said, Bob is our everyday hero.

Our Club Member and Past President Bob Louden accomplished the following Lions activities this week:

1) Assembled all of the pieces needed for the Fund Drive mailing 11/4 at a cost of about $275

2) With lots of help ( Marlene, Dick, George, Marge, Bob) mailed out 170 Fund Drive letters on 11/5

3) Filed the Saratoga Lions Charitable Foundation income tax return on 11/6

4) Petitioned the Post Office and got the combination to our PO Box which I will manage in the future.

Project: The A.J. Robinson Mobile Screening Unit and Saratoga Health Fair

Date: November 1, 2008

Purpose: The A.J. Robinson Mobile Screening Unit is a mobile trailer outfitted for providing health screenings that may highlight risks for blindness or vision problems. The trailer is also outfitted to be used for hearing screenings.

FRANK LEMMON MEMORIAL SERVICE

Frank Lemmon's memorial service on Monday, October 27th at 2 p.m. held at the Saratoga Presbyterian Church (20455 Herriman Avenue, Saratoga). After the memorial service, there will be a gathering in the Church's Fireside Room.

One more project is done. Monies collected are used to support programs and services for people who are blind or visually impaired as well as for sight conservation. Nesli Yilmaz was the leader of this project .

Our Loyal and Hardworking member Frank Lemmon is in a Precarious health situation.
George Bunyard and Bob Louden wrote the testimonial about Frank Lemmon and delivered it to him.

A Saratoga Lions Testimonial to

THE MOST EFFECTIVE SARATOGA LION OF THEM ALL!

Frank Lemmon, who was recruited into the Saratoga Lions in 1994 by Marlene Duffin, has held almost every office and responsibility that the Saratoga Lions Club could provide. He managed the Middle School Awards Program in 1995, served as Club President in 1998-99, Club Treasurer in 2000, Chairman of the Saratoga Lions Charitable Board in 2004-05, and Club Secretary from 2005 to 2008. And this is only a partial list!

His most valuable accomplishment among many during all these years is his organization and management of our annual mail campaign to solicit donations for our charitable activities from Saratoga residents. From 2004 through 2007 these campaigns brought in over $75,000 in donations to the Saratoga Lions, far more than all of our other charitable efforts combined! Frank created the solicitation letters for these drives, acquired lists of the mailing addresses of likely donors, and made sure that the drives were sponsored by leading Saratoga citizens.

The following letter which he received from the Saratoga Lions President way back in 1995 describes the skill and dedication which Frank has brought to all of his Saratoga Lions activities:

Dear Frank (June 22, 1995):
After reading over your report on the Middle School Award Program I am convinced that it is a perfect example of Lion project management and I would like to use it as an example for future projects which the Saratoga Lions will undertake in the future. I cannot thank you enough for the dedication, industry, and organizational skills which you applied so successfully to this program. If I were starting a new company today you would be one of the first people that I would call.

Hello Saratoga Lions,

Our club story for joining the Art and Wine festival of Saratoga in last minute:
Wow! What a club.
Yesterday, we had a busy Board and regular meetings. I will send an email about our meetings later but now, I would like you to know about our last minute event.

Yesterday at the club meeting, we decided to join " Taste of Saratoga" event on Saturday 9/20 (September 20th, 2008) between 10 am - 6pm.

We brainstormed about the event.

1. Rose Marie Dippel took over responsibility of booth in the event between 11 am to 3pm for Saratoga Lions Club. Rose Marie - A million Thank you's
2. I and Emily Lo went to Saratoga Chamber of Commerce to get permit for having a booth.
I got all the documents. Emily - A million thank you's
3. I went to Rose Marie Dippel House to give all documents from Chamber of commerce.
4. Marlene Duffin was going to send information about our club to Nesli Yilmaz ? Marlene - A million Thank you's.
5. Nesli was going to take copies of flyers and bring to the event. Nesli - A million Thank you's.
6. Jerry will take pictures during the event. Jerry - A million Thank you's
7. Emily and Rose Marie will be there to set up our booth.
8. I can stay with Rose Marie from 11 am to 12 am.
9. Rose Marie will represent us at the Saratoga lions Club booth between 11am to 3pm.
10. Rose Marie Pick up the banner of Saratoga Lons Club from Elaine today.

what did we do at the event ?
1. Emily and Rose Marie went to the event area (Saratoga Down town) before the festival start to set up the booth around 9 :45 am.
2. Nesli left the club flyers.
3. Emily and Rose Marie represented our clubs at the festival until 12:50 pm.
4. Berdan was there around 12:50pm and stayed with Rose Marie until 1:50pm.
5. Shirley would like to work for this event.
6. Around twenty people at the Art and Wine Festival would like to support our club projects and they added their contact information to our list.

Back Pack project - Done

Purpose: is to help " Homeless School Kids" program of San Jose Unified School District.
Marlene Duffin, Bob & Shirley Cancellieri, Bob Louden represented Saratoga Lions club and Jim Ousley and Chris Conner helped us for this project.

Marlene said about back pack project;

"The Saratoga Lions Board approved the backpack project several meetings ago

Saratoga Lions club almost paid to the South San Jose Lions Foundation....the Almaden Super Lions Foundation account for this project. Almaden Super Lions purchased supplies for 900 backpacks. They have a member that owns a large building in Santa Clara so that was the location for the trucked in school supplied and backpacks. Chris Conner, of our Club, made arrangements with San Jose Unified School District to pick up some of our allocated back packs for their homeless school kids program and I took the rest of our back packs for Bob Louden to deliver to 2 schools in the Campbell School District. Chris and her friend as well as Bob & Shirley Cancellieri were working on the backpacks Sunday. Chris said she would be at the meeting on Tuesday to update the Club. There were at least 50 Lions working Sunday as many Clubs purchased backpacks for their local school kids."

Books Aloud Project - Leader Elsie Riddle - Let's do it

City of Hope - Walk for hope - Linda Pugliese

What better way to show off Lions spirit and be highly visible to the public than to join our District 4-C6 Lions team and thousands of walkers in the City of Hope Walk for Hope to Cure Breast Cancer.

When - Saturday, October 4, 2008, 9:00 a.m (we'll carpool and caravan from San Jose)
Where - Ferry Building to AT&T Park and back (5K - 3 miles) in San Francisco
How much - $30 to join the team or donate to any team member in any amount. Your registration is a donation to City of Hope
Why - to support City of Hope in their research, education and treatment efforts to cure breast cancer and have a fun morning with fellow Lions along The Embarcadero in San Francisco

The Founding of Lions International

The International Association of Lions Clubs as now constituted was conceived at a meeting in Chicago, Illinois, on June 7, 1917. From that meeting came a call for the association's first annual convention, which was held October 8 -10, 1917, in Dallas, Texas, with 23 clubs participating. Lions International was organized with the idea of uniting, on a basis of unselfish community service, business men's clubs that had no other affiliations. This was a departure from the practice of forming business men's organizations primarily for business purposes.

By 1920, the association had more than doubled its membership and had expanded into Canada. By 1927, it had extended into Mexico and China, and in 1948 the first Lions Club in Europe was organized in Stockholm, Sweden. The expansion and growth of Lionism have continued steadily. Today there are over one million Lions serving in more than 30,000 Clubs located in 150 countries and geographical areas. The International Association of Lions Clubs for many years had been the largest, most active, and fastest-growing service club organization in the world. Lions International is truly international in every respect. wherever a Lion may travel, in his homeland or in a distant country, he will find fellow Lions extending a warm brotherly greeting and welcome. The Lions Clubs around the world constitute a tremendous non-political and non-sectarian force for goodwill, lasting peace and the promotion of human progress.

THE FOUNDING OF THE SARATOGA LIONS CLUB

The Saratoga Lions Club was founded on April 26, 1947, and was sponsored by the Los Gatos Lions Club. From the very beginning of the movement to incorporate the City of Saratoga to its actual incorporation the Saratoga Lions Club took a leading and active part. It was Lions Club funds that started the study of the Choro Foundation as a feasibility survey. Members of the club served actively on all phases of this movement from committeemen to Committee Chairmen and just plain interested citizens. After the election of October 1956 three members of the Saratoga Lions Club sat on the first City Council. They were Lions Raymond Williams, Barney Rosasce, and Harold Jepson, this was three out of the five people elected. From its inception the Lions Club has supplied personnel, the first being the first City Clerk, Lion Frank Bachman.

THE SARATOGA LIONS CLUB AFTER 25 YEARS (IN 1972)

The motto of Lions International, "we serve," is best exemplified at the local club level because this is where Lions actively participate in community affairs. The Saratoga Lions Club had in 1972 an unbroken record of over a quarter of a century of service to the City of Saratoga and neighboring communities. Our main concern lies in the support of activities which help rehabilitate and train the blind. Following this policy we have continuously contributed both minutes, muscle and money to the Santa Clara Blind Center. In addition, we collect used eye glasses for distribution to needy individuals.

In order to be able to assist needy persons with serious eye problems, we became members of the Lions Eye Foundation located in San Francisco. This medical facility, supported entirely by Lions, can care for cases requiring major eye surgery. To provide funding for care of the blind or those with low vision problems, we conduct an annual mail appeal in November. In addition, we participate in the exchange of miniature white canes to members of the community for a donation.

Another important element of the community to which we committed our time and money is the youth. Our boys and girls fund helps Little League, Pony football, girls softball, and other sports activities. In addition, we sponsor an annual Student Speakers Contest featuring local High School students. The State winners all receive scholarships. We work with our elementary school students by sponsoring a Flag Day ceremony, at which miniature flags and printed Pledge of Allegiance cards are given to each first grade student. Other activities include participation in county and district conventions, club picnics and parties, mystery bus trips and other planned activities designated to promote fellowship at the club level.

THE SARATOGA LIONS CLUB AFTER 60 YEARS (IN 2007)

Although the Saratoga Lions Club was chartered in 1947 some twelve years before there even was a city of Saratoga, since incorporation we have in reality grown, nurtured, and developed with the city. When one considers the history of the Saratoga Lions Club one really recites the history of Saratoga.

The Saratoga Lions Club has been active in practically every aspect of Saratoga life from cultural to financial and its members have indeed supplied the life blood of its operating force. In 1949 the Saratoga Lions Club actively supported and presented a Historical Landmark Marker designating the site of the Saratoga Toll Gate which was a major thoroughfare in days gone by. During the late 1940's various members of the Club took leading parts in the famous Saratoga Chip In Days with the Editor being Co-Chairman of the first one. Another town activity assisted by members of the club was the complete overhaul of the Memorial Plaza.

During 1953 with Lion Dr. Joe Simone in charge we presented at the Show Theatre "The Saratoga Frolics" for two nights with the Los Gatos Union High School as recipient of the profits. This was a performance replete with professional stage acts. Montalvo was to receive crews of Saratoga Lions on at least two work days in which we mixed concrete and replaced broken seats for the concrete benches in the lower garden. We also did a real job of gardening in the lower garden area.

Probably one of the most important ways in which the club has served its community and its youth in particular has been an active interest both from member participation to actual financing of Boy Scout Troop 540. Lion Clarence Neale being a former Scoutmaster, Wendell Hammon a former Assistant Scoutmaster and for many years as its Scoutmaster our own Lion Pat Lowey who has done a most out standing job and well deserves a "Well Done ".

No record of the Saratoga Lions Club would be complete without mention of the Saratoga Youth Center, an organization that since its inception has touched literally thousands of the youth of this community. Lions were in its founding and serve on its board of Directors to this day. We were active in the Youth Center with the moving of the original center which was part of the Saratoga Laundry and was moved from Big Basin Way to Fourth Street where in recent years it has been replaced by the magnificent center located off Fruitvale Avenue.

The Saratoga Lions provided aid to New York after the 9/11 tragedy, to New Orleans after the Katrina hurricane and to various locations in the Far East after the devastation caused by the recent tidal wave. Today the Saratoga Lions stand ready and willing to provide charitable assistance to worthy causes in Saratoga and throughout the world.
